Cockscomb Birdwatching

Belize packs more than 600 bird species into a country smaller than Massachusetts, and few places concentrate them like the Cockscomb Basin and neighboring Bocawina. This is a full day built for birders, starting early to catch the dawn chorus when the forest is loudest and the canopy comes alive. With binoculars up and your expert guide reading every call, you'll work the trails and forest edges where keel-billed toucans, collared aracaris, and montezuma oropendolas crowd the fruiting trees.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is world famous as the planet's first jaguar reserve, but it's also a birder's paradise, its rivers and broadleaf forest sheltering scarlet macaws, king vultures, slaty-tailed trogons, and the secretive great curassow. Your guide knows the spots, the seasons, and the songs, helping you separate a tinamou from a wood-rail by ear and lining up the scope on a perched raptor across the valley. Between sightings, keep an eye out for the agoutis, tapir tracks, and other wildlife that share these trails.
