Monkey River + Manatee Watching Adventure

The day begins on the open water, your boat skimming south along the Placencia coast toward the calm, seagrass-rich shallows where West Indian manatees come up to breathe. These shy giants are easy to miss and unforgettable to find, a smooth gray back rising, a nostril breaking the surface, then a slow roll back into the green. Your captain knows their haunts and cuts the engine so you can drift quietly and watch.

From there you turn for the mouth of the Monkey River, where the Caribbean gives way to a winding jungle waterway lined with red mangroves and overhanging hardwoods. As you motor upstream, the air thickens and the canopy closes in. This is black howler monkey country, and your guide will track the deep, roaring calls that carry for miles until you're idling right beneath a troop swinging through the branches overhead. Crocodiles bask on the muddy banks, iguanas drape themselves on limbs, and herons stalk the shallows.

You'll step ashore for a guided walk into the riverside forest, learning the medicinal plants and Maya bush lore your guide grew up with, before a stop in tiny Monkey River Village, a Creole and Garifuna fishing community reachable only by water.
